William Fairfield Society Continues To Grow!

In the picture at left, William Fairfield Society officer Ben Bartow signs two new member applications.  We are growing!

William Fairfield Wins Award at State Conference!

The William Fairfield Society was awarded a certificate for excellence in recruiting new members in 2013!  Way to go!!  Now let’s see about getting our members and their friends involved!

    Operation Gratitude Project

I have the paracord bracelet kits available for anyone who wants to make one or a dozen and hasn’t yet told me.  Plan to have these completed and back to me by April 15.  These bracelets are given to military personnel.  They look cool, but they are important because they can actually be used to save a life.  The bracelets are easy to make-kind of like the old friendship bracelets I made when I was a teenager.  If you would like to participate, give me a shout. (This picture is me, Polly, working on my paracord survival bracelet.)

    Like to Knit?

And speaking of Operation Gratitude, they also ship scarves to military personnel.  I have started knitting some to send.  If you are looking for an outlet for your itch to knit or crochet and would like to participate in a great effort to support our troops, why don’t you join me?  The scarves need to be made of either wool or acrylic in subtle colors such as blue, brown, olive, maroon or black.  NO red, white and blue combos!!!!!  Make them 5’-6” across and 45”-48” long with NO FRINGE.  Send to me by August 15.

Let’s keep our “virtual meetings” alive-send me your comments and photos!  I’d love to hear from you!

    Polly Bartow

    December Meeting Recap

The William Fairfield Society met on Saturday, December 22 at the IHOP restaurant in South Portland.  Three members, two prospective members and eight seniors attended.  President Sam Bartow presided.  Our honored guest was Senior State President Adam Bartow.  Members voted to purchase kits from Operation Gratitude to make paracord survival bracelets to send to troops serving overseas.  The bracelets can be used to save lives.  The president, recording secretary and registrar signed the application papers for four prospective members.  We are growing!  Yippee!  (Click on the picture below to see the large version of the picture!)

After the short business meeting, members made Valentines to distribute to the residents of the Maine Veterans Home in South Paris.   We ended up with a nice stack of lovely handmade Valentines!  While the members were working on creating Valentines, the seniors wrote letters to current members of the Armed Services.  These letters will be sent to Operation Gratitude to be included in care packages sent to our troops.

    Past Society Events

In July 2010, the society watched a Portland Sea Dogs baseball game from a skybox at Hadlock Field. Members also learned that baseball was played by soldiers at Valley Forge during the Revolution. Guests included the State President, Seona Crystal Kwon.

In July 2011, William Fairfield members and prospective members helped honor Rufus King by attending a Flag Raising ceremony at Veterans Park in Old Orchard Beach.    Rufus King was a signer of the Constitution who was born in Scarborough.

At the 2013 State conference, William Fairfield Society was honored as the local society with the most new members added in 2012-2013.
